My name is Sarah Stephens, and my grandfather was Monty Justice. For my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I am making a memorial garden dedicated to my grandfather at the Louisville Zoo. This blog will show the progress of the garden in photos.
I worked with Will Nay, Horticulture Supervisor at the Zoo, to select the garden site and design the placement of the plants. In addition to roses, all of which came from Monty Justice’s rose garden, the Memorial Garden will have four species of trees and shrubs.
For people who want to learn about rose care, my father and I are developing classes that will be held at the Memorial Garden itself. Details to follow when the class is ready to launch.
Here’s a chronology of the garden:
Picking out the garden site, March 31, 2012
Meeting with Will Nay to plan the garden, March 31, 2012
The garden site before the planting.
Publicizing the garden at the Kroger Derby Rose Garland Event, May 4, 2012

Stay tuned for pictures showing the roses in bloom during the summer, and from the dedication ceremony, to be held at the zoo in August.
